“Care to tell me what the hell happened with Cruz?”

Nora glanced up from her computer and relaxed against her cushy chair, meeting the very dark eyes of Zane as he closed, and locked, her office door.

“Well, good morning to you, too. I’m feeling better—thanks for asking.”

Zane approached her desk and flattened his palms on the glass. “Don’t play games.”

“I’m not playing anything.”

She shoved her chair back and stood. She’d be damned if she’d let anyone tower over her while spewing anger, especially the father of her child.

“The pregnancy slipped out,” she explained. “I didn’t mean to say a word, but I wasn’t feeling well and he picked up on it. That’s all he knows, though.”

The muscle in Zane’s jaw clenched, his gaze locked directly on to her.

“Believe it or not, Zane. I’m human and make mistakes.” She circled her desk and waited until he turned to face her, then pointed a finger in his face. “So don’t barge in here acting like some Neanderthal. I’m your employee, not your wife or even your girlfriend.”

In a flash, Zane gripped her finger, causing her to stumble against his chest. Nora’s breath caught in her throat, not from fear but from arousal. The intensity of his stare, combined with the hard plains of his body and his woodsy cologne, had Nora grappling with why she was angry in the first place.

“You’re the mother of my child and living in my house,” he countered. “You could be my lover if you’d only give in to what we both want and stop being so damn stubborn.”

She jerked her hand away and took a step back. She needed to breathe, needed some space to gather her thoughts.

“You think I’m stubborn?” she retorted, crossing her arms over her chest.

Zane’s eyes immediately went to the scoop of her blouse, and that invisible sizzle between them increased. He’d never looked at her like this before, and she would have noticed because she’d been staring at him plenty over the years.

“You’re impossible,” she went on. “Insist I move into your house, seduce me, then think I’ll just hop into your bed but not get attached?”

“I’m not in here to talk about our sleeping arrangements,” he fired back. “I’m here to make sure nothing else gets said until I can talk to Cruz. I don’t want the office finding out our secret.”

“Well, I did just send out a special company-wide newsletter.”

Zane’s eyes narrowed, his lips thinned.

“Don’t make stupid comments if you don’t want them thrown back at you,” she told him.

He stared at her another long moment before propping his hands on his narrow hips and glancing around the office.

“I can’t do this,” he murmured, his focus still on the desk. “I can’t keep living a lie to Cruz and trying to battle my desire to have you at every waking moment.”

Nora remained still, afraid that if she moved, she’d reach for him and they’d end up clearing that glass top of her desk like they’d done with his.

She needed to hear him out, needed to know his thoughts.
